Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 33. Cam Newton

Stats:

  • 31,698 passing yards
  • 190 passing touchdowns

The career of Cam Newton has been vastly overrated and somewhat underappreciated. Despite winning the league MVP award and carrying the Carolina Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015, Newton hasn’t been a transcendent player, at least not for the majority of his career.

Only once has Newton thrown for over 4,000 yards. He’s also thrown double-digit interceptions in every season of his career where he’s played at least 14 games. Despite being a big, strong athlete – outside of his 2015 MVP season, Newton has thrown more than 24 touchdowns just once.

In a day and age where completing passes have gotten incredibly easier, Newton has struggled in that department. In five of his nine healthy seasons, the former MVP has completed under 60% of his passes. Also, to make matters worse, Newton has only three winning seasons to his name.

Regardless of it all, Newton has plenty to be proud of. He currently ranks second in NFL history in terms of rushing yards with 5,398. It also never helped that he was consistently hitting the dirt as he’s been sacked the 41st most times in history.

Newton has had plenty of highs and several notable lows throughout his career but all in all, he could’ve done a lot more.
