Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 32. Bart Starr

Stats:

  • 24,718 passing yards
  • 152 touchdowns
  • 138 interceptions

Efficiency, consistency, and terrific numbers are the words that best describe the superlative career of Bart Starr.

Taken in the 17th round all the way back in the 1956 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, there was essentially no pressure on the shoulders of Starr. After all, players taken towards the bottom of the draft have little to expectations.

In his first five seasons, Starr looked very much like a player who wouldn’t last long in the league. Starr racked up just 11 wins in those seasons against 20 losses. But, seemingly out of nowhere, Starr suddenly got it. In the next three seasons, Starr was selected to the Pro Bowl. In that time span, he also led the Packers to two Super Bowls.

Even with all of his success, Starr saved his best for the second half of his career. From 1965-1967, Starr and the Packers were unstoppable, winning three straight Super Bowl titles. In 1966, Starr destroyed the competition. He threw for 2,257 yards, completed a league-high 62.2 percent of his passes, and threw 14 touchdowns while only throwing three interceptions.

By the time Starr wrapped up his career, he was a five-time champion, four-time Pro Bowler, and an MVP winner. Not too bad for a 17th round draft pick.
