Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 20. Matt Ryan

Stats:

  • 55,767 passing yards
  • 347 touchdowns
  • 158 interceptions

It’s been an interesting, yet productive career for Matt Ryan. The talent has always been there for the former number one overall pick out of the 2008 NFL Draft but for some reason, he hasn’t always put it together.

So far, Ryan has racked up ten straight seasons of at least 4,000 passing yards. His consistency, unsurprisingly, has pushed him up the charts on the NFL’s all-time leaderboards. Currently, Ryan ranks ninth in terms of both passing yards with 55,767 and completed passes with 4,867. He’s also tenth in passing touchdowns with 347.

For as great as Ryan has been and no matter how gaudy his stats are, they appear to be empty calories.

During his 13 year career, Ryan has only made it past the first round of the playoffs on three occasions. He’s consistently had big-time help on the offensive end in Roddy White and Julio Jones for instance but he just hasn’t had the sort of team success that his numbers would indicate.

There’s no need to regurgitate the embarrassment that took place in the Super Bowl in 2017.

In the end, Ryan has been a great player but more of a solo act as opposed to someone who can lead his team over the hump.
