Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 19. Alan Page

Stats:

  • 148.5 sacks

The career of Alan Page has turned into a somewhat forgotten player. It’s been over four decades since he made an impact on the field and considering that he was never able to push his Minnesota Vikings over the championship hump, his career has simply fallen by the wayside.

With that said, it shouldn’t.

It isn’t hyperbole to say that Page is one of the greatest defensive players of all time. Paul was the first defensive player to ever win an MVP award. Since picking up the hardware in 1971, only Lawrence Taylor has nabbed the most important singular award from a defensive position.

Throughout his career, Page was selected to nine Pro Bowls and nine All-Pro teams. In his prime, no one was better at dragging quarterbacks into the dirt, getting as high as 18 sacks during the 1978 season. For his career, Page got his hands on signal-callers 148.5 times, placing him safely in the top ten all-time.

Also, proving just how great he was, Page recorded the third most safeties of all time with three. It’ll be a long time until a defensive player racks up the awards and achievements of Alan Page.
