Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 11. Joe Montana

Stats:

  • 40,551 passing yards
  • 273 touchdowns
  • 139 interceptions

Ultimately, Joe Montana’s records don’t quite stack up compared to the players of today. Never has Montana thrown for at least 4,000 yards. Also, only once has he thrown over 30 touchdowns in a single year. With that said, things were simply different when Montana suited up.

Montana often relied upon a strong running game and great defense, as opposed to throwing the ball all over the field.

His willingness to depend on team ball, led to four Super Bowl rings. But just because Montana valued winning over gaudy numbers, that doesn’t mean he didn’t accumulate some terrific statistics. Montana currently ranks 20th all-time in terms of completed passes and 18th all-time with 273 touchdowns.

In his back-to-back Super Bowl years, which took place in 1989 and 1990, Montana, over a two-year stretch, combined for 7,465 passing yards, 52 touchdowns, and only 24 interceptions.

To sum it up, Montana was great and he has the hardware to back it up.
