Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 5. Dan Marino

Stats:

  • 61,361 passing yards
  • 420 touchdowns
  • 252 interceptions

Not every quarterback can play in any era, but Dan Marino can. In today’s day and age, players often rack up gaudy numbers. Too many times have we seen lesser-known names throw for over 4,000 and 5,000 yards. In the 1980s, however, those stats weren’t exactly the norm. In the case of Marino, he threw the ball all over the field and shredded virtually every defense thrown in his direction, now he has his name etched all over the NFL passing leaderboard.

In five different seasons, Marino led the league in passing yards. He currently sits sixth all-time with 61,361. He also has the sixth most touchdowns with 420. If you needed a play, Marino was most likely your man. He’d stuff the ball in between tight windows or, if the defense wasn’t paying attention, he’d loft it right over their heads to a wide-open receiver. In 1984, Marino played out of his mind.

With 5,084 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, and a completion percentage of 64.2, Marino easily pocketed the MVP award on the year.

Although Marino’s numbers compare favorably against any and everyone, he was never able to reach the ultimate heights of reaching winning a Lombardi trophy.
