Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 46. Bert Jones

Stats:

  • 18,190 passing yards
  • 124 touchdowns
  • 101 interceptions

We’ve seen players like Bert Jones in the past. A mediocre player who isn’t given much thought from fan bases, but immediately becomes the talk of the town with one great year.

There were no All-Pro selections or Pro Bowl appearances on the resume of Jones for practically the entirety of his career. Then, out of nowhere, he became arguably the best quarterback in the league in 1976. On the year, Jones led the league in passing yards with 3,104 and was amongst the league’s best with 24 touchdowns.

His playoff numbers that season should have been a sign, however. In the Baltimore Colts first round matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, they were crushed 40-14. Jones didn’t exactly help matters as he threw for only 144 yards and two interceptions.

Still, at the age of 25, it appeared Jones was just hitting his stride. That proved to be erroneous as he reverted back to his mediocre self.
