Ranking every MVP winner in NFL history: 43. Jim Taylor

Stats:

  • 8,597 rushing yards
  • 83 rushing touchdowns

There wasn’t a ton of competition when it came to winning the rushing title during the 1962 season. There were no tricky or creative plays drawn up. In fact, running plays were often expected and easily executed.

Only three backs in total that season went for over a thousand yards. Jim Taylor of the Green Bay Packers was simply the most dominant. His 1,474 yards were over 300 yards more than the second-best player that season, John Henry Johnson, and his 1,141 rushing yards.

The Packers would go on to win all but one of their games as they rolled to a Super Bowl win. That wouldn’t be the only time they won it all as Taylor finished his career as a four-time champion.

During most of his prime years, Taylor was considered the best in the business, constantly cracking over a thousand yards. With five straight Pro Bowl selections, along with an All-Pro appearance sandwiched in between, Taylor was easily inducted into the Hall of Fame.
