Trey Lance throws his first career touchdown on first career pass
Trey Lance just got into the league, and his first career pass went for a touchdown against the Detroit Lions.
One pass and one touchdown, not a bad start for Trey Lance in his NFL debut with the San Francisco 49ers against the Detroit Lions. The former North Dakota State quarterback was selected with the third overall pick after San Francisco mortgaged the future to move up in the draft with the Miami Dolphins.
So far, it looks to have been a good decision as Lance provides the 49ers with dual-threat mobility, a skill that lacks from current starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Eventually, Lance will take over as the starter, but for now, just his presence in the game will be enough to keep defenses guessing, that and the fact that he is a rookie.
Against Detroit in the season opener, Lance came into the game when San Francisco was near the goal line. On 1st and Goal, Lance faked the handoff perfectly and hit wide receiver Trent Sherfield in stride for a touchdown that put the 49ers on top early and set the tone.
Trey Lance is off to a good start with the San Francisco 49ers and provided a glimpse of a bright future.
Though the 49ers have been a successful team the last few years, the main questions surrounded the quarterback play. While the Bay Area was fortunate to make it to the Super Bowl following the 2019 season, inconsistent quarterback play in the 4th quarter squandered a golden opportunity to win a sixth Lombardi trophy.
Last season, even with the number of injuries suffered, the quarterback play was expected to be at a respectable level, but it didn’t. As such, the 49ers felt they needed to go in a different direction, and Lance was their choice.
So far, so good. They say the first impression is, more often than not, the best impression. Sometimes that’s not the case, however, but for the 49ers faithful, they are hoping that this touchdown by Lance is the first of many of a promising career.
