Chicago Bears: 5 Players who need to play well to beat Browns in Week 3
3. Jason Peters must be able to handle Myles Garrett
In addition to drafting their possible franchise quarterback, the Chicago Bears drafted who they felt could be his blind-side protector as well. They drafted Teven Jenkins, a player many draft experts felt they’d pick up in the first round.
Fast forward to training camp and Jenkins needed to have back surgery. The Bears released Charles Leno Jr so they had no one on the roster with extended experience at such an important position as the left tackle is.
Jenkins’ injury necessitated the team going out and signing a free agent left tackle. They found him in Jason Peters. Peters is a future Hall of Fame player. He knows the position as much as anyone. He is 39 years old, however, and has dealt with injuries, missing eight games last season.
The injury bug hit Peters again in Week 1. He went down and wasn’t able to return to the game. To make matters worse, his replacement, Larry Borom, suffered a high ankle sprain and left the game as well.
Peters’ injury wasn’t as severe and he returned last week. So far for the season, he’s played pretty well. He ranks third among all tackles with a run block win rate of 87 percent. He also had a couple of pancakes.
This is wonderful, considering the 39-year old was fishing just weeks ago when the Bears came calling.
This week will be a challenge, though. He’ll go up against one of the premier pass rushers in Myles Garrett. Peters has the experience to know exactly what Garrett wants to do, but the question is whether he could move his body to contain Garrett.
If Peters is able to handle Garrett for the most part, then that will make FIelds’ life much easier. The rookie won’t have to worry about what’s happening with his blindside. Yes, the Browns also have Jadeveon Clowney on the other side, but FIelds will be able to see him coming and thus make the moves to avoid him. You can’t shake someone you can’t see coming.
