Chicago Bears: 5 Players who need to play well to beat Browns in Week 3
1. David Montgomery needs to run and take pressure off of Fields
One thing that will help Fields during the game is an effective running game. Part of that will depend on Fields’ own legs. He does a good job of getting away from the pressure and using his legs to make big plays.
The bigger chunk of the running game has to come from David Montgomery. If he has a big game, FIelds doesn’t have to do as much with his passing. A good Montgomery game forces the Browns defense to move closer to the line of scrimmage to try to stop him. That opens up the space for Fields downfield. He’ll be able to burn the Browns with play-action passes. The free space will help the Bears’ speedy receivers make big plays downfield.
The strength of the Browns defense is on the edges. If Montgomery is able to run up the middle and break tackles as well as he’s done so far in his career, he’ll be able to wear down the defense. The strength of the Bears’ offensive line is the interior. If they do a good job of opening holes for Montgomery, then he’ll have a big game. That is critical in the fourth quarter. If the Bears have a lead, they have to use Montgomery to seal the game.
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy keeps talking about having the running game more involved in the offense. Well, this is a great opportunity for him to do it. He has a rookie quarterback making his first career start. Having a running game help him out will make the kid feel more comfortable. He already has great confidence. If the running game helps him out, that confidence will only rise.
