20. New Orleans Saints: John Metchie, WR, Alabama

Drew Brees and his new hair have taken over in the broadcasting booth which has put the New Orleans Saints in an unfamiliar position, with someone other than Brees starting. In Week 1, Jameis Winston made it look as though the team was not going to miss Brees in the least bit. He threw five touchdowns and had no interceptions as they made it look easy against the Green Bay Packers. Then in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, they were the ones who were on the wrong side of a beating.

This time, Winston had multiple turnovers and threw no touchdowns which had the internet going crazy with “Tampa Bay Jameis” memes. But that’s not exactly fair to him, since the entire team was off. On top of that, he doesn’t exactly have the best wide receivers to work with at this point.

Michael Thomas is one of the more productive players in the NFL and continues to play well when on the field. But so far in 2021, he has not suited up. This has left Jameis without a No. 1 receiver and while that doesn’t mean he deserves no blame at all, the Saints do need to be better about getting Winston some playmakers. They do that here by selecting John Metchie from Alabama. Suddenly, Alabama has turned into one of the best programs when it comes to producing wideouts with players such as Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, and Henry Ruggs all going early in their respective classes.

Like many of the names listed above, Metchie is a pure route runner who seems to catch everything thrown his way. He has 17 receptions in the first three games of the 2021 season which is his first year as the No. 1 guy. As long as he continues to grow as a player, he’s someone who should make it into the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and should it be New Orleans that drafts him, he would be a perfect complement to Thomas while potentially taking over as the No. 1 guy down the road.
