Poetically, Tom Brady became the NFL’s all-time leading passer on Sunday Night Football against the Patriots.

It was a night of narratives for Tom Brady as he and the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers headlined the NFL Week 4 slate with a trip to Foxborough on Sunday Night Football. Not only would this be the first time since joining the Bucs that Brady would face Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, but it was a chance for him to further cement his legacy with another NFL record.

With Drew Brees in attendance, Brady entered Sunday night’s game less than 100 yards away from the NFL’s all-time passing record of 80,358 career yards. New England had said they would recognize the accomplishment, which makes sense for the quarterback that led them to six Super Bowl victories.

And in the first quarter, after a couple of fruitless drives from both teams, Brady got his numbers.

Here’s the pass to Mike Evans that got Tom Brady the record:

Funnily enough, there wasn’t much of a deal made in Gillette Stadium at all. They flashed that he’d broken the record on the jumbotron and that was all.

More importantly, Brady then added to the total as he completed another pass on a drive that culminated in Ryan Succop field goal to give the Buccaneers an early lead over the familiar Patriots.

At this point, the quarterback breaking records is simply commonplace. When you’re playing in the league at over 40 years old and have been a winner with the consistency that Brady has, it’s only natural for that to be the case.

This won’t be the last NFL record Tom Brady breaks but it’s a pretty darn important one. Maybe this will be enough to just narrowly get him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame — you know, after he retires following his age-55 season.
