Chase Young is waking up, could he help the Washington Football Team turn around their season?

You’re probably tired of hearing this by now, but the Washington Football Team came into the 2021 season with what many believed to be the best defense in football. Through six weeks that has been hardly the case. The secondary has been absolutely dreadful, the linebackers have been bad, and the defensive line hasn’t been nearly as dominant as expected.

This has all led to a 2-4 start for Washington. They’ve been disappointing, and truthfully look a little lost at the moment. Somebody needs to wake them up – and that could be Chase Young.

Like Washington, Young has started the season off slow. Through the first four weeks of the season, Young had zero sacks. He had 13 tackles (three for loss), one pass deflection, no forced fumbles, and just two quarterback hits.

Washington Football Team: Is Chase Young waking up?

Now, all of that being said – Young really wasn’t playing bad. It has been hard for the pass rush to produce much, seeing as the quarterback is getting the ball off in two seconds due to weak secondary play at the moment. He’s brought a decent amount of pressure so far. No, he wasn’t playing great – but it feels like a stretch to say he was “bad”.

In the last two weeks though, the production has sky-rocketed. Young has six tackles (one for loss), two quarterback hits, one forced fumble, and (most importantly) two sacks. He is starting to find his way to the QB much faster and we’re seeing him make plays like he was doing so frequently in his rookie season.

The rest of the Washington defense hasn’t woken up yet. But they’ve shown flashes of it in recent weeks. We’ve seen a few more stops and a few more turnovers. They aren’t putting it all together just yet though.

And it feels the same with Young. He’s starting to make plays, starting to show those flashes of greatness again – but we’re waiting to see him truly take over a game.

Could Young and the Washington defense help each start to click? Young makes a play and fires up the defense, then the defense makes a play riding off the momentum. In turn, the opposing offense can’t focus on Young as much. Then we get more plays from Young, which helps the entire defense. And soon we’ve got a well-oiled machine again.

The Washington Football Team had one of the best defenses in football last season. They were supposed to be an elite unit once again this year. That hasn’t happened yet. Chase Young appears to be waking up though. Can he get the rest of the defense rolling with him?
