Sometimes when watching the Chicago Bears play, it’s hard to see how they’ve won three games this season. What’s even more confusing is that two of their wins were against very good teams as they knocked off the Las Vegas Raiders 20-9 in Week 5 as well as the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2.
This weekend, they were playing against the defending NFL champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it was ugly. The Bears mustered up just three points and their usually impressive defense gave up 38. Worse than the points they surrendered was the way Tampa Bay could just do whatever they wished.
The Bus practically lived in Chicago territory, and Tom Brady had four touchdowns — including his 600th career scoring pass. The Bears also gave up 182 yards on the ground as they had no answers for anything.
Most alarming, however, was the body language from Justin Fields. The rookie quarterback sat on the sideline looking disinterested. While it’s understandable that a 38-3 defeat is going to upset anyone, the first-year starter didn’t seem to be engaged — whereas other rookies might have been in the ear of the veteran on their team trying to see how to get better.
Fields finished with just 184 yards and had three picks with no touchdowns. His rookie season has been one to forget and the team has to hope he can rise above this eventually — while also praying he doesn’t get “broken” along the way.
