NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 24. Tua Tagovailoa – Miami Dolphins

Tua Tagovailoa has been the subject of trade rumors all season as the Dolphins have always been tied to the Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson. It’s wild that the Dolphins are that desperate to get rid of Tua, who was once one of the best prospects to come out before a major hip injury really derailed his progress. He still makes absolutely terrible decisions at least twice a game, but the rest of the game, he seems to find some fire.

He is a high-risk, high-reward player since returning from injury. He will throw some interceptions, but then on his very next drive, he looks like the best quarterback in the conference. He can hit some very difficult throws, but then he throws it in an area where there is no receiver. It’s really a roller coaster ride having Tagovailoa as your quarterback.

There’s still a ton of potential here. Maybe he’s trying too hard because of the scrutiny around him with this trade deadline quickly approaching. He’s either trying out for the Dolphins, or trying out for his next team. Either way, the Fins really didn’t deal with this situation very well. They treated their starting QB like an afterthought, and now he plays like that. He’s in desperation mode, and that’s not good for anyone.

Since he got to Miami, the Dolphins have never fully committed to Tua. They wanted Justin Herbert instead, and then they wanted to start Ryan Fitzpatrick under center when the games actually mattered, and now there are calls that Jacoby Brissett would be a better option. It’s just a bad situation, and it may not feel like it, but it’s best for Tua to go somewhere else. He has top-10 potential, but there’s a lot more we need to see.
