NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 19. Jameis Winston – New Orleans Saints

Jameis Winston might be the hardest quarterback on this list to evaluate. Are the New Orleans Saints happy with their decision to keep him under center after Drew Brees retired? If feels a lot like Cam Newton’s one season in New England where it’s a “for now” play and the Saints will eventually choose a young guy to play the position, but for now Winston has been fine.

The Saints aren’t asking a lot of Winston. He was a do-or-die quarterback in Tampa. In New Orleans, he was tasked with finding the past of least resistance. He has been magnificent at play action. His passer rating when faking the handoff is one of the best in the NFL. That’s huge.

His numbers are really good. 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions is one of the best ratios in the league. However, looking at Winston’s play, it’s hard to put him in the upper echelon of quarterback. Would anyone above him on this list switch quarterbacks, even if it’s just for this season? That’s a hard question to answer.

Still, if we told you that Winston was a top 20 quarterback in the league and people were arguing that was too low, most wouldn’t believe you two years ago. He’s really fixed his value over the past two years, and he will likely be a starting quarterback someone for the next few years.
