NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 16. Baker Mayfield – Cleveland Browns

This one might seem a little low but wait for the players above Baker Mayfield before you judge. Mayfield has been… okay? He’s coming back from an injury right now, but his play is hardly the source of confidence right now.

The biggest issue with Baker Mayfield this season is he’s not extending plays like he used to. He has taken 18 sacks through Week 6. He only got sacked 11 times through Week 6 last season, and that includes a 4 sack performance in Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He isn’t getting the ball out as quickly, and he keeps trying to find the perfect play.

Mayfield missed Week 7’s Thursday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos, but the Browns won without him. Not saying that is a sound long-term strategy, but the reality is the Browns won a game with Case Keenum under center.

Mayfield probably has the best chance of anyone outside the top ten to skyrocket into the top ten. He has a ton of talent and a great team around him. Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham have been in and out of the lineup. If they can build some chemistry with Mayfield, it could launch the Browns back into contention in the AFC.
