NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 31. Geno Smith – Seattle Seahawks

Poor Geno Smith. He never really got a chance to prove himself when he was the starting quarterback with the New York Jets, and he chose the backup job with the Giants when he finally left. He then got a chance to replace Eli Manning, ending his consecutive starts streak. Ben McAdoo went about it in the worst way possible, and Smith had to deal with the fallout of that.

He’s had a nice backup career since then, and he’s getting a chance to be the starter with Russell Wilson injured in Seattle. However, it’s another bad position for Smith. While throwing to DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett isn’t the worst place to be, but trying to deal with the issues on the offensive line and playing catchup for the defense is not the best situation for Smith.

It’s clear the Seahawks also want nothing to do with giving Smith a chance to make difficult throws. He did have a huge throw to Metcalf in Week 7, but that was really it for the passing game. The Seahawks spent the rest of the game using a heavy running game only to lose 13-10 to the New Orleans Saints.

Smith might be better than some of the other quarterbacks on the list, but we will never know. Pete Carroll isn’t going to give him a chance to show what he can do. So, for now, he is near the bottom of the quarterback rankings.
