NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 28. Justin Fields – Chicago Bears

Justin Fields has been bad this year. There’s no other way to put it. It might be why the Chicago Bears were so adamant about keeping Andy Dalton as their “QB1” for so long. However, it’s been about a month since Field was named the permanent starter, and it’s come with mixed results if we’re being nice.

He was an outright disaster against the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his other games, he was somewhere between fine and bad. He has shown more promise than Davis Mills, but he still has a lot of work before he’s an adequate NFL quarterback.

The Chicago Bears aren’t really helping his case. Allen Robinson is a problem this season, but not on opposing secondaries like he usually is. He’s never had more than 65 yards in a game. He rarely catches more than 60 percent of his targets. He’s not getting open as much, and the rest of the Bears’ weapons haven’t stepped up after David Montgomery got hurt. The Bears are relying on Khalil Herbert to help spur the offense.

Fields is a rookie who needs to do a little more, but his team needs to do a lot more to help him as well. Matt Nagy is coaching for his job, but he isn’t acting like it. The whole Bears offense needs to prove more, but for now, Fields falls low on the quarterback rankings.
