Last season, the Tampa Bay Bucs added Antonio Brown to complete their super team and now the Dallas Cowboys should do the same with Odell Beckham, Jr.
Odell Beckham, Jr. got his wish as he became a free man when the Cleveland Browns released him on Friday. Now everyone is trying to guess where he will land next and one team that might not make sense at first is the Dallas Cowboys.
But should they consider making a claim for their former divisional rival? Perhaps they should, if they want to seriously contend for a Super Bowl, that is.
Just last season, a team in a similar situation as Dallas made a huge move when they added a former All-Pro wide receiver and that led to them winning it all. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers already had Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Rob Gronkowski on their roster but still found room for Antonio Brown.
The addition of Brown elevated their offense and helped them win it all. For Dallas, adding OBJ to a roster that has CeeDee Lamb, Amari Cooper, Dalton Schultz, and a soon to return Michael Gallup might sound like overkill — but imagine how hard it would be to stop Dak Prescott from carving defenses up at will.
That’s without even considering the fact that they have two running backs on pace for 1,000-yards and Cedrick Wilson filling in nicely for Gallup.
Again, some can point to all of that and say there’s no need for Beckham. But we have already seen Gallup go down with an injury and Amari Cooper has been dealing with his own nagging injuries as well. Throwing in a former Pro Bowler who is capable of destroying defenses would only serve to keep the offense humming even if any of those players were to miss more time.
As for the salary ramifications, the Cowboys would be on the hook for just north of $7 million should they claim Beckham. That’s a lot for an 11-game rental but we also know Jerry Jones is desperate for one more shot at the “glory hole.”
It might sound crazy at first but if Dallas really wants another Lombardi Trophy, adding Odell Beckham could help them accomplish just that.
