Dallas Cowboys Round 3 pick: Brandon Joseph, S, Northwestern

Early on this season, the Dallas Cowboys were getting much better play from their safeties. Not unrelated to that is the fact that they actually used some resources on the position this offseason when they signed Damontae Kazee, Malik Hooker, and Jayron Kearse.

Oddly enough, Kearse has been the best of the trio which is surprising given the fact that Kazee was once the NFL interception leader and Hooker was a former first-round pick. Then again, each of them is coming off a serious injury — which is why Dallas signed them anyway because they got them at a discount.

We won’t know for sure what they will do in the coming offseason when it comes to their safeties. What we do know is all three that they signed this year will be free agents and history tells us that this front office is unlikely to sign all of them back. Heck, they may not bring any of them back knowing how they treat the position.

That’s why their third-round pick is used on Brandin Joseph from Northwestern. What makes Joseph an ideal fit is his ability to play in deep coverage. Dallas already has Donovan Wilson under contract who plays closer to the line of scrimmage and Kearse, who also plays close to the line, is the most likely to be re-signed since he will probably command the least amount of money.
