2. Perfect Fit: Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina – Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule hasn’t found his franchise quarterback. Christian McCaffrey’s career is wasting away thanks to his insanely high usage rate. It’s about time the Panthers look toward the draft for a franchise quarterback. The best fit for Matt Rhule and Joe Brady’s offense is North Carolina’s quarterback, Sam Howell.
This season, the Panthers allowed Sam Darnold to show off his running ability, using him as an RPO threat. The result saw Darnold rush for a career-high in touchdowns (five through nine weeks). Imagine if they had a better athlete.
Howell is a better runner who can hold up in an offense that uses RPOs. The 6-1 255-pound passed has good bulk and isn’t afraid to use it when running. He’s tough inside the pocket and difficult to bring down.
As a thrower, Howell excels when asked to throw off run fakes. The future NFL quarterback has shown great arm power and accuracy on deep throws. Howell does a good job with anticipatory throws and shows good accuracy. Thanks to his quick-twitch in pocket mobility and solid athleticism, he’s able to make accurate throws on the run. Matt Rhule should keep Howell where he belongs, in Carolina.
