Atlanta Falcons Second-round pick: Zion Johnson, OL, Boston College

Taking another offensive lineman on Day 2 isn’t sexy. Any fan can see the Falcons need to upgrade their running game in the worse way. It’s so bad the Flacons had a three-game stretch where they averaged 2.7 yards rushing per game. They have some talent along the offensive front with offensive tackle Jake Matthews and offensive guard Chris Lindstrom.

They are missing a dog upfront. Someone who plays left guard with a nasty side to him.

The Falcons should tap into the Boston College well one more time by taking offensive guard Zion Johnson. The 6-3 316-pound lineman brings versatility and style of play that could set the tone for the Falcons offensive line. Johnson spent a lot of time at the tackle spot.

He’s a good mover in space, but his length could be concerning. His best fit comes at guard, replacing Jaylen Mayfield, who should work best as a rotational player.

The fifth-year senior dominates at the point of attack. He’s a power player with strong hands who controls tackles. He gets great push and leverage off the snap. Johnson’s ability to kick out and take on ends could help with a more creative approach to the running game. Should an injury occur, the Boston guard played tackle.
