NFL: Ranking Quarterbacks who were one-hit wonders: 25. Gardner Minshew

The story of Gardner Minshew might now have been completely told yet, but as of right now he looks like the typical “one-hit wonder”. He was awesome for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 coming in for the quickly injured Nick Foles. The former Super Bowl champion had a rough start to the season, and then he broke his collarbone. So in comes this sixth-round rookie with a pretty sweet mustache, and the rest is history.

Minshew’s look helped breed his legend, which had Jaguars fans excited for Sundays again. He won six of the 12 games while Foles was out and threw for 21 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions. The next season, the Jaguars made him the starting quarterback, but it just didn’t work out and he won just one game in an injury-riddled year that saw Mike Glennon and Jake Luton start games on their way to getting the first-overall pick and the rights to Trevor Lawrence.

Minshew had one of the most intriguing stories on his way to the NFL. He almost transferred to Alabama in college when he was at East Carolina University so he could learn more about coaching. Then, Washington State called him to transfer after the tragedy of Tyler Hilinski’s death. He led the nation in passing, finished fifth in Heisman voting, and he made it to the NFL despite all the odds being stacked against it ever happening.

After his second year with the Jaguars, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles to be a backup plan for Jalen Hurts. Hurts has been good enough to stave off Minshew for now, but the man that used to have a mustache could still get a starting job with many seemingly becoming available this offseason. We’ve seen crazier things.
