NFL: Ranking Quarterbacks who were one-hit wonders: 7. Don Majkowski
Don Majkowski was an unlikely story in the NFL. He was a 10th-round pick out of the University of Virginia. Just two years later, he became the starting quarterback. He beat Randy Wright for the job, and that ended up being the best possible decision.
Majkowski would lead the NFL in passing yards with over 4,300 in his first year as a starter. He took a team that won just four games the season before and took them to a 10-win season. He threw for 27 touchdowns and 20 interceptions as the Packers threw the ball at will. Majkowski showed he was playing in an era that was beyond what people expected.
Majkowski re-signed with the Packers to be the starter again, but an injury the next season really threw off his trajectory. He tore his rotator cuff and was lost for the season. The next season, his play was inconsistent and he was eventually benched. He got the starting role back in 1992, but he tore a ligament in his ankle, and he ended up being the football version of Wally Pipp. Brett Favre took the starting role while Majkowski was out, and Favre started every game through 2007 after that.
Majkowski would be the backup in Detroit and Indianapolis before calling it a career. He leaves behind a strange legacy in Green Bay, as he still holds some franchise marks. It was really all in that one great season, but after that there was a lot to be desired about his career.
