NFL: Ranking Quarterbacks who were one-hit wonders: 3. Blake Bortles

Technically, Blake Bortles had a few hits, but there was one true hit in his career. He had a 4,400 yard passing season, but that also came with a league-leading 18 interceptions. He led the league in sacks twice, getting knocked down more than 50 times in back-to-back seasons. These weren’t his hits. His hit came in 2017 when Bortles was the answer to the Jaguars’ needs. He led the Jaguars to a 10-6 record, while throwing for 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Bortles finally learned how to not lose the game for the Jaguars, and he brought the Jags within a few bad calls by the refs from making the Super Bowl.

Bortles was quickly becoming one of the great stories in the NFL. The Jaguars shocked the draft when they took Bortles third overall out of UCF. They avoided the complete disaster that was Johnny Manziel, but they also left Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr, and Jimmy Garoppollo on the board. All three of those quarterbacks are still starting in this league.

Bortles was never able to be a starter after his miraculous 2017 season. He went back to throwing way too many interceptions in 2018, and he only started 13 of the team’s games. He was never a starter again. The Jaguars weren’t giving too many chances to Bortles, and neither were the other teams in the league.

The fact that Bortles never got another chance in the league as a starter seems strange when compared to other quarterbacks on this list, but it might just be teams learning the very hard lessons of one-hit-wonders.
