NFL: Ranking Quarterbacks who were one-hit wonders: 21. Mike Glennon
Mike Glennon is one of those horror stories where a one-hit-wonder turned the aura of a season into a massive contract. The Buccaneers drafted Glennon with a third-round pick after a successful run at NC State. He was a part of that dreadful 2013 NFL Draft that included Geno Smith, EJ Manuel, and Matt Barkley. Glennon might be the best quarterback in that draft.
The Bucs gave Glennon a shot to take over the starting job within the first month of his rookie season. Josh Freeman was the starter, and he was dreadful. Glennon was worth a shot to then-head coach Greg Schiano.
Glennon was pretty good as a rookie. He threw for 19 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, but the Bucs started the season 0-8. Glennon finally won a game, and then he turned one win into three very quickly. The Bucs were starting to look like a team that could compete on a weekly basis. Obviously, the playoffs were not happening, but at least the Bucs could look respectable.
This great rookie season didn’t avoid the Bucs from signing Josh McCown to be the starter under new head coach Lovie Smith. It was a sign of things to come for Glennon. The Bucs turned down multiple trade offers to make Glennon a starter. Then, he eventually signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency, but they traded up in the draft to take Mitch Trubisky (over Patrick Mahomes by the way). He was watching the draft with a party of fans. Awkward.
