NFL: Ranking Quarterbacks who were one-hit wonders: 18. Kevin Kolb

Kevin Kolb was someone that fell under the mantra “quarterbacks the Philadelphia Eagles wanted to replace Donovan McNabb”. The only difference is the Eagles actually traded away McNabb to let Kolb be the starter. It was all because of Kolb’s one “hit”.

During the 2009 season, Kolb replaced an injured McNabb early in the season. He only started two games, but he was phenomenal. In his first start, Andy Reed forced Kolb to throw 51 times against the New Orleans Saints as his defense gave up 48 points and he threw three interceptions. In his second game, he threw the ball all over the Kansas City Chiefs. He won Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 327 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

McNabb returned the next week, and Kolb didn’t see the field much the rest of the season. He was given a huge contract to return after the Eagles traded McNabb. He was the first player in NFL history to throw for 300 yards in his first two NFL starts. However, things didn’t go as planned. Kolb got a concussion in his first game as starter, and this was the opening for the redemption tour of Michael Vick.

Kolb was traded to the Arizona Cardinals to be the starter there and signed a $63 million contract. Two years later, he was cut. He ended up losing a lot of time to injury, and he actually lost his starting job to John Skelton in just his second season under the big contract. Kolb was given more money to go to the Bills, but he didn’t do anything in Buffalo. Eventually, his career sputtered into the ether, and now he’s one of the clearest one-hit-wonders of his era.
