The Saints lost their franchise-best QB in Drew Brees, and are now on the search for their QB of the future.

Before Drew Brees retired from football and joined the NBC broadcast team, there were rumors of him retiring almost every year during the final five years of his career. Of course, Brees retired last season, and now this season is the Saints’ first year since 2006 in which the Saints had to start a QB not named Drew Brees.

This season the Saints have started three different QBs, and I think it’s fair to say but, none of them have been quite that impressive. The first QB to earn the starting job for the Saints was Jameis Winston.

While Winston started the season pretty good with a big won over the Green Bay Packers, he quickly struggled after that as threw two interceptions against the Panthers and struggled against the Patriots as well. Winston started playing somewhat better as the season went on, but sadly for him, he tore his ACL and hurt his MCL in a game against the Buccaneers.

After Jameis went down with an injury the Saints had an in-season QB battle that was won by Trevor Siemian. Siemian’s first game was against the Buccaneers when Jameis went down with his injury. It is safe to say that Siemian struggled against the Buccaneers and would continue to struggle until the Saints benched him for the highest-paid QB on the roster, Taysom Hill.

Besides making his first start of the season, there was palpable excitement and interest to see Hill play, mainly because of Sean Payton’s quotes regarding Hill and Hill’s rather large contract. While Hill has only played one game at the time of writing this article, he struggled as he threw four interceptions and had some ugly passes in general. Sure Hill had some nice moments using his legs, but overall it was not a good game at all for him.

While of course, the one position that the Saints should focus most of their efforts on is the QB position, there still are some other spots they should look to improve on. One thing that hasn’t helped any of these QBs is the receiver talent, or lack thereof, on the Saints.

With Michael Thomas being out with injury, I am assuming the Saints hoped that one of their receivers would have broken out by now, and while Deontae Harris has had some nice moments, the Saints should still target some receivers.
