Davis Mills has been named the starter for the Houston Texans for the remainder of the 2021 season and it was the right call by head coach David Culley. Of course, it wasn’t the right call because of talent. It’s hard to deny at this point that Tyrod Taylor is a better player overall, but this was still the right call since they need to see what they have in Mills.

A third-round pick from Stanford, Mills has a lot of talent and there’s plenty to like about his game. However, he wasn’t drafted as a pro-ready player, but instead as a developmental prospect. Houston is now 2-11, after the loss to Seattle in Week 14, which means they will likely have a shot at nearly any signal-caller they want.

Chances are, Mills won’t be enough to make them want to pass on a rookie but the Texans are going to make sure that’s the case. As for his start this weekend, he deserves some credit as he was solid with 331 yards passing on 33-of-49 attempts. He added a touchdown and had no turnovers but still led his team to just 13 points overall as they were beaten 33-13 at home.

Houston has continued to be a mess in 2021 and planning for the future is the only thing they have left this season.
