2Q 10:08 – Play Action Pass to Julio Jones

A staple of the Titans’ offense for the past few years has been the play-action pass, and while it has been present the past few weeks, it lacked the fire it had while Jones and A.J. Brown have been out. The Titans usually fake their outside zone play and then throw in breaking routes deep over the middle.

On this play, the Titans lined up in a tight I formation with the tight end off the ball on the left side. They then faked the outside zone play left, and Tannehill set up and threw a 10-yard out route to Jones.

The play worked for two reasons. First, the flat defender to the left side hesitated at the run fake and could not get underneath the route to break up the play or worse, intercept the pass. Second, Jones ran a sharp route against decent coverage by the cornerback.

The cornerback was playing head up on Jones and seven yards off the ball. At Jones’ snap of the route outside, the cornerback was only two yards away. However, Jones’ made a perfect cut to the sideline and incredibly maintained separation from the cornerback. This play impacted the game because it reminded everyone the potential of the offense.

With Jones back and Brown hopefully to return again, the Titans can start running these faithful play-action passes more and more with two great route runners.
