NFL: 25 Most Surprising Pro Bowl Picks This Century: 3. 2021 Evan Engram

The 2021 Pro Bowl didn’t actually happen because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, but they still named teams. Most of the selections were fine since they didn’t have to name alternates for the players who made it to the Super Bowl, but one selection left everyone scratching their heads. Evan Engram was one of the most frustrating players in the league in 2020. Giants fans were sick of his antics. He never made a catch in a big spot. Yet, he made the Pro Bowl.

Did the voters even look at Engram’s season? His stat line isn’t even that good. He had 653 yards and one touchdown last season. One touchdown for a tight end through the air (he also had one rushing touchdown) should not lead to a Pro Bowl bid. The kid has all of the talent in the world, but he has no chemistry with quarterback Daniel Jones, and he’s far away from one of the best tight ends in the league.

Sometimes players get credit for playing on a great unit. That’s not the case here. Engram was a member of the 31st ranked passing offense. Only one other team was worse at passing the ball. He couldn’t even catch the ball with consistency. He had close to a 10% drop percentage with over 100 targets his way. What’s worse is Giants quarterbacks threw at least five interceptions when targeting Engram. Obviously, those aren’t all Engram’s fault, but he definitely could have helped in that category.

This is just a bonehead pick by the Pro Bowl voters. Robert Tonyan didn’t make the team despite having close to the same receiving yards and 10 (!!!) touchdowns. What a blunder by the voting committee.
