Cleveland Browns QB scenarios if the team moves on from Baker Mayfield

There seems to be quite a bit of talk about the Cleveland Browns possibly moving on from Baker Mayfield after the 2021 season. What would they do then?

Will the Cleveland Browns seriously move on from 2018 number one overall pick Baker Mayfield in 2022?

The more times it gets brought off, the more you can’t help but wonder if the possibility might soon get bumped to a probability.

Mayfield has one season remaining on his rookie contract with the Browns, a fifth-year option worth just shy of $19 million. Because there is no dead money attached to Mayfield at this point in time, the Browns have an intriguing decision and upcoming process on their hands. They clearly have a very good head coach in Kevin Stefanski as well as a potentially dominant defense and running game.

If the QB is the one holding them back, they’ve got to do what they believe is right.

If Baker Mayfield is out for the Cleveland Browns, who is in?

If the Browns begin to dangle Baker Mayfield in trade talks, the only likely way they would get rid of him is with something alternative already in place.

The thing to remember here is, Kevin Stefanski was not part of drafting Mayfield to the Browns. He came to Cleveland in 2020 when Mayfield was entering his third NFL season. Unfortunately, it appears that Mayfield has regressed.

With that said, at a price tag under $20 million and with Mayfield’s history and talent level, some team would undoubtedly want to take a shot on that fifth-year option plus the possibility of franchise tags after that.

Again, the question is, what would the Browns seek in return? Which players could be top options for them in the 2022 offseason at the quarterback position if they move on from Baker Mayfield?
