NFL Black Monday 2022 tracker: The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings cleaned house. The Dolphins made a shocking decision on Brian Flores, and more.
Now that the 2021 regular season is over for over half of the league, NFL Black Monday 2022 is in full force with coaches and executives around the league being let go.
At this point, no move has been more shocking than the Miami Dolphins’ decision to move on from head coach Brian Flores, who is coming off of a second consecutive winning season, albeit without a playoff appearance.
The Denver Broncos got their head coaching search underway a day earlier than some of these other teams, while the Jacksonville Jaguars’ search has been ongoing for a couple of weeks already.
Buckle in for a wild and crazy NFL Black Monday 2022
Let’s take a look at the job openings around the league and potential job openings. Keep coming back to this page for the latest updates as moves take place on NFL Black Monday 2022.
Chicago Bears
Fired:
- Head coach Matt Nagy
- General manager Ryan Pace
The Chicago Bears have made the long-anticipated moves of firing both head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace. For Chicago fans, these moves are probably at least a year overdue.
Now, the team’s focus will be on putting the proper infrastructure in place to surround Justin Fields with the best possible staff to develop him.
Denver Broncos
Fired:
- Head coach Vic Fangio
Although the Denver Broncos have had horrendous quarterback play for the last three seasons, not many coaches are going to survive losing 30 games with a team.
Vic Fangio deserved a shot as an NFL head coach and it didn’t work out. He will get a lot of offers, to be certain, to be someone’s defensive coordinator next season.
The Broncos and general manager George Paton plan on casting a wide net for the team’s next head coach.
Minnesota Vikings
Fired:
- Head coach Mike Zimmer
- General manager Rick Spielman
The Minnesota Vikings, just like their NFC North rivals in Chicago, have cleaned house. A complete reset in Minnesota will be fascinating to watch unfold. What will this mean for the future of Kirk Cousins in Minneapolis?
Miami Dolphins
Fired:
- Head coach Brian Flores
Again, this was probably the most shocking news of NFL Black Monday 2022 so far. Flores’ three years with the Dolphins end with a record of 24-25, but consecutive winning seasons to close things out.
He will likely be coveted by another franchise but there are certainly issues to be addressed, including the fact that Flores could not settle on a QB or offensive coordinator.
Although there were immediate rumors of the Dolphins coveting Jim Harbaugh, owner Stephen Ross shut those down.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Fired:
- Head coach Urban Meyer
The Jaguars’ head coaching search has been underway for a couple of weeks at this point. They have already begun reaching out to prospective candidates and requested a variety of interviews with the likes of Dan Quinn and Kellen Moore (Cowboys DC and OC), Nathaniel Hackett (Packers OC), Jim Caldwell (free agent), and they apparently could have some interest in Bill O’Brien.
The Jaguars need to find someone who can help them develop Trevor Lawrence ASAP.
Houston Texans
The Texans have not fired head coach David Culley and no decisions are expected to come on NFL Black Monday 2022.
It would be surprising given the job Culley and his staff seemingly did to surpass outside expectations in 2021 but not surprising considering the fact that Culley may have been hired in 2021 as a placeholder for GM Nick Caserio’s true target in 2022.
We are fixing to find out.
New York Giants
Out:
- Dave Gettleman (retired)
The Giants are reportedly planning on keeping head coach Joe Judge in place, but with general manager Dave Gettleman apparently retiring, they will be trying to sell a new GM on Judge.
An interesting development in New York, to be certain.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are expected to reach out to the Houston Texans to discuss the possibility of hiring on Pep Hamilton as their offensive coordinator.
Matt Rhule appears to be safe for another season in Carolina, but the offense needs to be revitalized. The fact that the Panthers want to talk about bringing in Pep Hamilton could indicate they are thinking seriously about taking a QB in the 2022 NFL Draft.
