The New York Giants have zeroed in on Buffalo Bills executive Joe Schoen as their new GM. Could Brian Daboll soon follow him as head coach?
The New York Giants have made the first significant step in their rebuilding process, reportedly hiring Buffalo Bills executive Joe Schoen (pronounced “Shane”) as their next general manager. Could Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll be soon to follow?
Given the fact that Schoen has seen exactly what Daboll can do as an offensive coach, those are certainly the easiest dots to connect.
Daboll to the Giants, however, is anything but a foregone conclusion…
Brian Daboll expected to be among Giants top HC candidates
Things have obviously been quiet on the head coaching front for the Giants because of the fact that the team didn’t have a general manager. While some teams interviewed head coach candidates and GM candidates at the same time (which seems extremely odd), the Giants went the wise route of hiring a GM first.
Schoen inherits an interesting situation in New York where the Giants have no clear situation at the quarterback position, an offensive line in need of an influx of talent, and a defense that is actually pretty solid.
As a matter of fact, the Giants’ defense is coordinated by Patrick Graham, someone who was expected to get a lot of head coach looks from other teams this cycle and simply hasn’t.
Brian Daboll might be the easiest name to connect here, but there will be some competition, of course. Schoen shouldn’t just limit his selection at head coach to familiarity, but the fact that Daboll has been instrumental in setting up Josh Allen for success is not lost on anyone, least of all the Giants’ new general manager.
The Giants will obviously be candidates to make a bold move for a quarterback this offseason, including potentially making a deal for Russell Wilson, who apparently has the Giants on his shortlist of preferred teams.
Although it would be easy to say Brian Daboll is the favorite for the job, the other top candidates shouldn’t be counted out and it’s been rumored that the Giants’ job would be coveted by the likes of Brian Flores and potentially Dan Quinn as well.
