25 Most Disappointing 1 Seeds In NFL Playoff History: 25. 2007 New England Patriots
There is only one team on this list that made it to a Super Bowl. It’s the 2007-08 New England Patriots. Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and the rest of this star-studded roster won every single game from Week 1 to the AFC Championship Game. They beat everyone, and most of the time they crushed them. They put up points in bunches. They scored 50 points in a game multiple times. People were talking about “undefeated” from very early in the season. The Patriots were the one team to accomplish it over a 16 game regular season.
There’s one thing we tend to forget about the end of that Patriots season. The team was severely losing steam by the end of the season. They beat the Colts 24-20 in Week 9. Their Week 12 game against the Philadelphia Eagles was a three-point win, as was their Week 13 game against a bad Baltimore Ravens team. In Week 17, the New York Giants went shot for shot with the Patriots, and if it wasn’t for an epic game from Moss, they would have lost in their final game of the season.
They went into the playoffs surviving more games than they were winning convincingly. The Patriots then went on to beat the Chargers and Jaguars by pretty underwhelming differentials. They were ready to face the Giants again in the Super Bowl.
We all know what happens next. The Giants put up the perfect game plan. They harass Brady with a front seven that includes Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck, and Osi Umenyiora. David Tyree made maybe the most famous catch in Super Bowl history. Asante Samuel dropped a game-ending interception. Plaxico Burress scored the game-winning touchdown. And Brady couldn’t hit Moss at the end. Yes, it can be disappointing for a team to lose in the Super Bowl.
