1. Washington Commanders NFL Draft target: Malik Willis, QB, Liberty

NFL Draft media is buzzing over Malik Willis, and understandably so. He showed up and showed out at the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl. Kenny Pickett came in as QB1, but I imagine teams looking for a quarterback in today’s game came away with Willis on their mind. That’s why the senior prospect may hear his name called in the first round by the Washington Commanders.

The Commanders seem to have it all. They have a solid receiver room led by Terry McLaurin, a speedster who’d benefit from the big-armed Willis. They have a good versatile running back in Antonio Gibson and a solid offensive line. What’s missing is a dynamic thrower. Willis gives them that and more.

Ron Rivera knows what it’s like coaching a quarterback with a live arm who can run and pass. During his days with the Carolina Panthers, Rivera coached that quarterback (Cam Newton) with a similar skillset to the Super Bowl. Willis has his issues in terms of inconsistent ball placement.

However, he can make all the throws either from the pocket, outside the pocket, or off-platform. He’d give the Commanders a spark, and he doesn’t have to start year one. If he does, his athleticism, quick-twitch in pocket movement, and powerful running style can help bail him out of dangerous situations.

Willis is an electric playmaker who, with the right team, can develop into a star. He’s not a first-round prospect in most years, but the Commanders can trade down and take him. or take the leap of faith and draft him at No. 11. Either way, it’s a win for a team that is a quarterback away from being a perennial playoff contender.
