Steelers should target Donte Jackson

Cornerback will once again be a need for the Steelers as both Joe Haden and Ahkello Witherspoon are pending free agents. Even if one of them returns, there is still a need to build this position back into a strength. Considering this team’s track record of drafting defensive backs, a free agent would be the way to go. Donte Jackson would be a great fit for this defense.

Jackson boasts elite athleticism to go along with good man and zone coverage skills. He has been a consistent starter since he was drafted and now he hopes to get paid as such. While a good player in his own right, Jackson will likely be in the next tier of free-agent cornerback. While names like J.C. Jackson and Carlton Davis will dominate the offseason, they are likely to commend close to 20-million dollars a season. Jackson will not.

Jackson would be an instant starter if added to this defense, as he could step in as an outside cornerback and provide some athleticism that this defense is so desperately missing. While he should still be expensive and highly sought after, his contract shouldn’t break the bank as some others will. Jackson is a good fit and provides the Steelers defense with some elements they have been lacking in coverage. He would be a great target for this team once free agency opens.

The Steelers will have more money to play with than usual this offseason, and they should make the most of it. While they won’t be top spenders in the market, there are quite a few names that make a lot of sense for this team. Keep these three names in mind as free agency gets closer, as each of them would be a compelling addition to this roster.
