Dallas Cowboys Free Agent Target No. 1: Taven Bryan, DT

Another first-round pick in 2018 about to hit the open market is Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Taven Bryan. Coming out of Florida in 2018, Bryan was a player the Cowboys scouted and apparently loved.

Former defensive line coach Rod Marinelli was really high on the 6-foot-5, 291-pound defensive lineman but instead, they went with linebacker Leighton Vander Esch. While LVE was explosive as a rookie, he went the wrong way in each year after and could be gone.

Still, he was a better producer than Bryan who has yet to live up to his draft status. In four seasons, he has just 86 tackles, 15 for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. He has twice registered double-digit pressures with 12 in 2019 and 10 in 2021 but overall, he has been someone that the Jags haven’t relied too heavily on.

With that being the case, Bryan will surely hit the open market and he’s the exact type of player Dallas loves — a former first-round pick they can help rehad. Bryan still has the power and explosiveness that led to him being a first-round pick, he just hasn’t had the coaching, consistency, or talent around him to really become what he’s capable of.

That’s why it would make sense for the Cowboys to take a flier, and it wouldn’t cost a ton of money. Throw in their need in the middle of the defensive line and this should be a move they strongly consider.
