The Atlanta Falcons decided to release pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. ahead of 2022 NFL Free Agency. Which teams could he land with?

The Atlanta Falcons are getting off to a quick start to the 2022 NFL offseason by releasing former big-money free agent pickup Dante Fowler Jr.

Fowler was once a first-round pick (3rd overall) of the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2015.

As a former third overall pick in the NFL Draft, Fowler has simply not lived up to expectations. Even though his productivity has not been consistent, there are some really good blips on the radar for Dante Fowler Jr. including some really good football with the Jacksonville Jaguars when they reached the AFC title game in 2017 and with the Los Angeles Rams in their NFC championship run in 2018/19.

Now, he’s looking for a chance to rebound with a new team. He’s only 27 going on 28 in August so he will undoubtedly get a good opportunity somewhere. Here are three options for Fowler now that he’s a free agent.

Dante Fowler Jr. option No. 1: Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers ranked in the bottom half of the NFL last season with 35 sacks as a team.

After letting Melvin Ingram walk, the Chargers opened up a hole on defense opposite Joey Bosa.

Uchenna Nwosu wound up second on the team behind Bosa with just 5.0 sacks, and although sacks are not the only effective metric for pass rush productivity (pressures and QB hits are also important), it’s crucial for the Chargers to upgrade in the pass rush department this offseason.

Fowler might not be an immediate upgrade on paper in terms of his recent production with the Atlanta Falcons, but for a team like the Chargers with a coach like Brandon Staley, it would be worth a dart throw in free agency.
