Dallas Cowboys trade target from Miami No. 1: Eric Rowe, Safety

For whatever reason, the Dallas Cowboys continue to treat the safety position as a revolving door. They won’t use premium draft picks on any players and they also look for bargain free agents year after year.

Usually, it backfires but in 2021, it worked out rather well. The Cowboys signed Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker, and Damontae Kazee and suddenly had a formidable corps. Kearse was the surprise of the bunch as he was far and away the best safety on the team, and may have prived himself out of town.

As for the others, Kazee and Hooker both played well and while Dallas would probably like to retain at least one, they also won’t get into any bidding wars. If the market indicates they get paid, the Cowboys will probably blame the cap and try again to look for one-year solutions.

One such solution could be Eric Rowe, who was previously a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2015. After just one season there, he ended up with the New England Patriots for three years and followed Brian Flores to Miami in 2019.

Rowe ended up being a solid starter for the first two seasons, recording 81 tackles and a pick in 2019 and 91 tackles and two picks in 2020. However, he found himself on the bench behind Brandon Jones and Jevon Holland for much of the 2021 season — although he still did get 71 tackles.

That demotion could lead to him being on the way out and if so, the Cowboys might be willing to give him a shot. With his background as a cornerback, he would be a solid fit in the deep role that Kazee occupied this past season and with only one year left on his contract, he would fit right into the Cowboys’ plans of keeping a safety for no more than one season.
