NFL Offseason 2022: Dallas Cowboys on the move for 2022

Amari Cooper, WR

Cooper was traded from the Raiders to the Cowboys during the 2018 season and instantly developed a connection with Dak Prescott.

Amari Cooper then signed a massive extension.  He signed a five-year, $100 million contract, which gave Dallas its next great receiver.

However, Cooper might be on his way out of Dallas.  With the emergence of CeeDee Lamb, and others like Michael Gallup and Cedrick Wilson Jr, Cooper and his large contract could be put to use more efficiently somewhere else.

It’s not really a knock on Cooper.  In 2019 and 2020, Amari Cooper amassed over 1,100 yards and 5 touchdowns in each season.

Even in 2021, his yardage total decreased, but he still hauled in 8 scores and is set to enter his age-28 season.

If the Cowboys’ cap space situation wasn’t as dire, I think Cooper could stay put, but with their current cap figure, trading him makes a lot of sense.

If they do trade Amari Cooper, it would have to be a post-June 1 trade, which would save them $20 million against the cap while only incurring $2 million in dead cap.

Dallas could essentially erase their cap surplus by trading Cooper.  However, a restructure can’t be ruled out either, which could save around $12 million.

Amari Cooper could fetch a 1st round pick, and he’d be in high demand.
