NFL teams in need of a star WR: Cleveland Browns
The Browns were expected to be in Super Bowl contention last season however they were far from it. Finishing in third in the AFC North at 8-9 behind the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals is not what the Browns faithful were ready for.
The Browns made some huge defensive additions in the offseason and with a dual rushing attack on offense with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt victory was all but assured. What we didn’t expect was poor quarterback play from the injured Baker Mayfield and a sudden midseason departure by wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr (although some of us expected it).
This left Mayfield to work with receiver Jarvis Landry, who is an exceptional leader but has not had a 1,000-yard season since 2019. In 2021 he logged 570 receiving yards with two touchdowns. Not the kind of stats needed for a true #1 receiver.
Backing Landry was receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones and speed option Anthony Schwartz, but neither were able to rise to the spot of a top receiving threat.
The Browns, very similar to the Colts, have the defensive unit needed to reach the postseason but they need to add another pass-catcher to their offense for the necessary edge to keep opposing defenses on their heels.
The Browns were not able to accomplish that with the performance issues from Mayfield combined with the noticeable absence from Beckham Jr.
With the 13th pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Browns will have almost every available receiver at their fingertips.
