Saquon Barkley trade destination no. 2: San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers have some players at the running back position they can certainly build around.

Elijah Mitchell proved to be an absolute gem of a late-round pick for the 49ers, running for 963 yards in 11 games.

On the flip side, Trey Sermon was a disappointment in his rookie season from the outside looking in, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel really picked up most of the slack as the secondary runner for the 49ers. He was the most effective besides Mitchell, at least.

The 49ers intrigue me as a possible destination for Saquon Barkley for similar reasons that I would like to see him with the Miami Dolphins.

Kyle Shanahan’s offense has consistently been a spot where players could come in and have success, specifically at the running back position.

A player like Saquon Barkley could be a bell-cow type of back for Shanahan and with the way the 49ers have been playing complementary football in recent years, he could thrive.

As the 49ers transition away from Jimmy Garoppolo and usher in the Trey Lance era, a player like Barkley could be huge for Lance if he can stay healthy. That kind of outlet for a young quarterback could be huge, especially if Barkley can bounce back.
