The Dallas Cowboys go heavy on defense in this 2022 NFL Mock Draft, starting with a safety in Round 1 as they finally address a glaring need

With free agency looming, one thing is certain about the Dallas Cowboys — they probably won’t be buyers unless it’s going after some bargain players.

That’s been their M.O. ever since Stephen Jones took a more active role in the personnel department and while it has its advantages, it’s also frustrating for fans. In addition to that, it means the NFL Draft is even more important in terms of team-building.

Here, we look ahead to that process with a seven-round mock draft for the Dallas Cowboys, as they finally add a deep safety — a position they have avoided for years.

Dallas Cowboys Round 1 Pick: Daxton Hill, S, Michigan

With their first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys grab Michigan safety Daxton Hill. The younger brother of Baltimore Ravens running back Justice Hill, Daxton is the No. 2 safety on just about every board behind Kyle Hamilton from Notre Dame.

Hill excels not only in deep coverage but also spent time at cornerback for the Wolverines and can play in the nickel. He’s an aggressive player with great instincts and while some might say he’s on the slighter side at 6-foot and 192-pounds, Dallas did just fine with Damontae Kazee who is listed at 5-foot-11 and 174-pounds.

Should they be able to retain 2021 breakout star Jayron Kearse and add Hill, they would finally have a top-flight safety corps in Big D.
