A new general manager and a new head coach are only the first of many bold moves the New York Giants need to make to have a successful offseason
The New York Giants have been spinning their wheels for the last several seasons, making few if any inroads in their quest to get back to the top of the NFC East and on the path to competing for a Super Bowl.
New York has ranked No. 31 in yards on offense and No. 31 in points on offense for each of the past two seasons. They trailed only the New York Jets (No. 32 in yards and points) in 2020, the Houston Texans (No. 32 in yards), and the Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 32 in points) in 2021 for being the worst offensive team in the NFL.
It’s no secret co-owners Steve Tisch and John Mara have been struggling to put together the right personnel to get the team back to their once prominent state. The Giants have seen four different head coaches on the sidelines since 2017: Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo (interim), Pat Shurmur, and Joe Judge.
With the consistently disappointing showing from Judge and General Manager Dave Gettleman, Tisch and Mara decided to clean house after the 2021 season, kickstarting what could be an offseason that transforms the New York Giants from stem to stern.
Bold moves are already underway, as the Giants have hired a new General Manager, Joe Schoen, and a new Head Coach, Brian Daboll to get a clean slate for the organization that’s won four Super Bowls in their 97 seasons.
The first major roadblock for Schoen and Daboll to overcome will be the flat-out messy state in which Gettleman and Judge left the team. The Giants are top-heavy on their player payroll, have several key contributors that are free agents this offseason (which they likely can’t afford to re-sign), and have major decisions about the futures of RB Saquon Barkley and QB Daniel Jones— key offensive players who have underwhelmed and are under contract.
Let’s take a look at five moves the NY Giants can make to have a successful offseason.
