Chicago Bears mock draft: David Bell, Wide Receiver, Purdue

David Bell‘s stock took a dive after he had a slow 40 time. This is one of those cases in which the eye test is better than just plain numbers. Looking at his film, he just looks like he belongs in the NFL. He will have a successful career.

At Purdue, he played in an offense that emphasized the pass. He is a volume catcher and recorded 100+ yards in 11 of his last 17 games.

No, Bell won’t kill the defense with speed. However, that was never his game. He is the type of receiver who keeps the chains moving. If you miss on a deep pass and the running play only gets you two or three yards, you can depend on targeting Bell and him getting you the first down consistently. You need those types of receivers.

This is another position in which the Bears likely find a free agent. They can find a deep threat there and have Bell be their possession receiver.

Bell is an Allen Robinson clone. With Robinson all but gone, the Bears can have his replacement. Like Robinson, Bell can line up on the outside or at the slot. Bell also has no problem going to the teeth of the defense and making a big catch. There were countless times in which he caught the ball in traffic and took a big hit.

Another aspect in which Bell is similar to Robinson is route-running. Neither one has speed but they run excellent routes. They also use double moves to create some space.

Bell may not be flashy but he just gets the job done.
