The Miami Dolphins have a new RB1 for Mike McDaniel’s offense, signing former Arizona Cardinals back Chase Edmonds to a two-year deal.
The Miami Dolphins are getting NFL free agency off to a roaring start, as pretty much everyone expected they would. The Dolphins are one of the most cap-rich teams in the NFL, and they are never shy about acting like it when it comes to free agency.
With a new coaching staff in place, the Dolphins made a couple of big moves just before and just after the official start of the legal tampering period, re-signing pass rusher Emmanuel Ogbah to a four-year deal and also getting a new RB1 for head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense.
That back is none other than former Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds.
Chase Edmonds signing on as Miami Dolphins new RB1
This is a pretty good deal for Edmonds considering his former teammate with the Cardinals, James Conner, just got $7 million per year on a new deal with Arizona.
The Dolphins are only tied to Edmonds for one year with this pickup and we could certainly see them make additional moves at the running back position in free agency or the NFL Draft, but it’s clear that Edmonds was a priority for them and for now, he’s the RB1 in South Beach.
This move is intriguing because McDaniel has been with the 49ers, coaching against Edmonds the past few years. Obviously, as an offensive coach, McDaniel wasn’t scheming against Edmonds, but he certainly has had the opportunity to watch him play up close and that familiarity will undoubtedly come up as the Dolphins announce and discuss this move.
Even though the Dolphins were one of the league leaders last year in rushing attempts, they were middle-of-the-pack in actual success in terms of yardage, rushing touchdowns, and yards per carry.
They needed a piece like Edmonds to come in and provide them with a weapon on all three downs and he’s finally going to get the chance to show what he can do as the “featured” back in an offense that should be very favorable to him.
