Armstead joins the Panthers in free agency

Contract projection: 3-years, $72 million

There figures to be a relatively healthy free agency market for the offensive line this season, but no name has more acclaim than Terron Armstead. The soon-to-be former Saints left tackle is the definition of a stalwart tackle that an offense can be built around. He does have some injury concerns and he is over 30, but there is good reason to believe that he will be a fixture on whatever line adds him.

The Panthers are in a weird spot as a team. While they are in desperate need of a quarterback, continuing to build out a strong roster for whoever is throwing the ball makes sense in 2022. That could mean Sam Darnold is still the quarterback or potentially a rookie, but no matter who is handling quarterback duties having Armstead as your starting left tackle is only a good thing.

His deal is a monumental one, but considering what tackles get paid in free agency it would be well worth it. While there is the concern that he won’t be able to play a full season, at a minimum Armstead would be a huge upgrade to this unit. If the Panthers want to make their next quarterback’s job easier, finding a way to sign Armstead has to be a priority.
